Did you know, in the UK a child comes into care in need of a foster family every 20 minutes?
In England currently there are approximately 80,080 children in care and only 65,000 foster carers. The Fostering Network’s Foster Care Fortnight™ (10 to 23 May) seeks to raise awareness of the need for more foster carers.
In Bracknell Forest, there is a particular need for foster carers of teenagers, sibling groups and children with complex needs. Without more people coming forward to foster, children may have to live in residential institutions, or with foster families far from home. This often means children leaving their family and friends, split up from their siblings, and moving schools. Many of the children will have suffered neglect or abuse, all will have experienced trauma and loss.
Each child deserves a caring and loving home. A wider pool of foster carers with the right skills and qualities would make it easier for children to stay local. Staying local gives children the best chance of a happy and stable childhood, as well as a successful future near to family and loved ones.
We have exciting opportunities available for those who are interested, and we will be launching a pilot scheme this year to recruit specialist carers. More mainstream carers for children of all ages are also needed. We pay generous allowances and provide specialist training and support.
Foster carers come from a wide range of backgrounds and professions. What unites them is a desire and ability to support young people in care to fulfil their potential. In most cases, you can work alongside fostering if you have a flexible role. We are a ‘fostering friendly employer’ so staff are able to take extra leave for fostering duties.
Council foster carers, Ingrid and Paul, say:
“Our advice to anyone who is thinking about becoming a foster carer is, do it! It’s the most rewarding job and every child deserves the best possible start in life”.
